When Platforms Preach: The Social Media Effect

One of the primary challenges for the Seventh-day Adventist evangelism strategy is establishing a presence in the complex world of social media and engaging an audience that is predominantly preoccupied with an imagined digital interaction rather than genuine, face-to-face conversation. In a medium flooded with irrelevant information and eclectic content, it seems almost impossible to achieve "viral" status with a clear and simple narrative inspired by the Adventist message. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the complex relationship between evangelism and social media, utilising the communication process model as a hermeneutic tool, and to identify the potential of new media as a medium for conveying the gospel message.

Dr. Sorin Petrof is the Communication and Media Director at the South England Conference and a researcher in media studies. With over two decades of experience in media and leadership, he specialises in communication strategy and digital transformation. He holds a PhD in Information, Communication, and Documentation Sciences from Université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3. He has completed "Strategic Communications in Society: Power, Ethics and Practice" at The London School of Economics and Political Science. He has served in various executive positions, including Executive Director at Credo Television Network and Programme Director at Radio Voice of Hope. Currently a Guest Lecturer at Newbold College, Dr Petrof combines academic rigour with practical expertise to help students navigate the evolving media landscape.
